Singapore; like Asia, but not

Posted on November 20, 2009. Filed under: Uncategorized |

So, Singapore. People told me that I would either love it or hate it, that it was a kind of Asia for beginners, that it was more Western than most of the West.. Well it was like Asia-lite, it is more Western than some Western countries, and I did like it very, very much. There are aspects to the place that are crazy (the preponderance of shopping malls is one that springs to mind) but there are parts of it that are simply lovely.
There are the parts of the city that are very colonial in influence, such as the Victoria Concert Hall:
There are other parts that are utterly utterly modern, as is manifested in their Christmas decorations. This is one of the more sedate displays, this photo complete with James' aunt and uncle Annick and Damian, with whom we stayed:
We visited places such as the MINT toy museum, which we very much enjoyed (although, if I'm being honest, I probably liked it more than James!). Here is a shot of James checking out the very impressive toy lunchboxes:
Another highlight was the Singapore Botanical Gardens, where James spotted this lovely sculpture, entitled Joy:
We also spent some time with Damian and Annick. One of the evenings they brought us out to partake in a wonderful dinner, and afterwards we went to the famous Long Bar at Raffles Hotel, where I had the cocktail Singapore Sling and we enjoyed the traditional monkey nuts:
Singapore was awesome. I wanna go back already..
