Viva Penang!

So when we left the wee island of Pangkor that James described in his last post, we travelled to the considerably larger island of Penang, further north along the west coast. Penang is a large island with a population of over a million, so you don't usually remember that you're on an island at all. We stayed in the capital of Georgetown, having taken the  ferry from Butterworth on the mainland. Georgetown is a great city, full of fascinating architecture; Colonial era buildings alongside Indian houses and shops and Chinese temples. There were some gorgeous Chinese clan houses. Here are some closeups of one of my favourites:

Penang is famous for being the food capital of Malaysia, and we happily feasted our way through the few days we spent there. We had Chinese, Malay, Indian, Nyonya, and even Western (Chilis, for anyone that knows the place!) food while we were there, and it was all excellent.

We also travelled up Penang Hill on a funicular railway. Man that was scary. It took 30 minutes and I was uncomfortable for about 29 of them. Everyone else seemed to be having a ball though. I took some pictures to distract myself:

When we got to the top we ooohed and ahhhed at the view, went for a walk, and then had Devonshire cream tea at a fancy restaurant. As you do.

From Penang we went back to KL again, stayed overnight with the lovely Doreen and Terry, and then we got the sloooooooow train to Singapore. Where we currently are. Post coming on that soon!

Hope all is well where you all are,

xR
