Turns out tropical islands are all they are cracked up to be..

A short break on a tropical island, eh? Why yes, yes indeed. James was keen to go to one of the islands off the east coast of Malaysia as he had been to many of them when he lived here. Also, they are famous for snorkeling and I had never been. His top choices were the Perhentian Islands but when we looked into it we discovered that they had closed for the monsoon season the weekend previous. Disaster! James then thought that as Tioman was a few hundred miles south along the coast, we might be in luck. We checked long term weather forecasts, spoke to the people at our resort of choice, and booked. And boy were we glad we did. This is where we stayed:

Tioman is a small island of the east coast, and the town we chose was one of the smallest, Genting. Our hut was right on the beach. It was small (our budget was stretched as it was) but clean and adequate for our needs. We indulged in wee walks, reading, sitting on the beach or on our veranda, swimming in the (warm!) sea and generally feeling like we were taking a holiday from our holiday. It was simply lovely. And we hadn't even snorkeled yet!

I hadn't snorkeled before but James had, and he was quietly confident that I was going to love it. And he was right. The weather the day of the trip wasn't great; the sea was choppy and there was a bit of rain to start the day but it did improve. We had four snorkeling stops and were out for about 6 hours in total. We went on a speedboat out to the coral reefs and it was amazing. The first stop was a little scary for me as it was quite choppy and in open sea, and I was unsure of myself. Once I had that one under my belt though I was away! Across the 4 stops we saw several different types of coral, teems and teems of fish of all different sizes and colours, and sand that was almost white. It was amazing.

We stopped here at this wee island for some shallow snorkelling and to eat our lunch.

We also did some fish feeding here (they love it!) and I took some dodgy video:

All in all, Tioman Island was brilliant. We will be back.
