A newbie’s impression of Bangkok

Hello there friends, hope all is well with y'all.

We've been here 5 days now and Bangkok is, well, big and hot and humid and old and new and hot and green and concrete and hot and I could go on spouting adjectives for weeks! We have been treated to wonderful kindness from Joette and Denny and Khun Pataya, and are today taking the overnight sleeper to Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand.  The biggest touristy events were visiting the Grand Palace the day before yesterday and the ancient city of Ayutthaya, which Khun Pataya was kind enough to drive us to yesterday.

The Grand Palace is certainly Grand. It is a beautiful collection of buildings; temples, residences, a library, statues, and art collections. The temple of the Emerald Buddha is one of the most peaceful places I have ever been, despite the fact there was about 40 people in the temple with us at the time. One of the great things is that we visited th eGrand Palace about an hour before it was due to close, but they don't rush you out (because there are temples there so some people would be praying) so it was really quiet at the end of our visit and we saw a lot of the place almost on our own. Wonderful, wonderful stuff.

Ayutthaya was the ancient capital city of Bangkok and is about an hour's drive from Bangkok. There is a bustling large town there now but the ancient city also remains. The capital was held there for several hundred years and was held by 33 kings until it was sacked in 1767 and left in ruins. It is beautiful and impressive, and a little sad.

In other news, James' phone died yesterday which has left us with neither phone nor camera for James. Doh! So we have priced a super cheap phone (sans camera) and hopefully will be getting that today. James, possibly in sympathy with his phone, is a little unwell today too so we are taking it easy ahead of the overnight train. There are a couple more pictures on Flickr if you are interested. Click on one of the pics to get there. Catch you guys soon!
