My New Commute

Posted on September 9, 2009. Filed under: Uncategorized |

So, I’m more than halfway through my last week at work, with a day off
tomorrow to celebrate my mum’s graduation (a Masters degree with
distinction obtained while at work – I am the proudest son), and this
new commute is wrapping me in a bleary blanket. My old route to work
was an easy 20 minute tube ride or an easier but slower 45 minute bus
ride. On the face of it, my new route shouldn’t cause me too much more
pain; my alarm now goes off at the same time it always used to, and I
can still catch a tube to work. However, this station is the furthest
in the network from central London and because it is in the middle of
the commuter belt, parking is..expensive.

To solve the problem, I am parking slightly out of the town center and
walking for an eternity to catch a tube (or a train) that takes 45
minute to get into London, and a further 15 minutes to get to where I
actually need to be. Woe is me! I suppose it’s just what you are used
to that counts; while this is a standard commute for most of the
people sitting around me, it seems to drag on for an age.

In reality, apart from not getting home at a reasonable time and being
more tired in the mornings, the biggest difference is with the
environment that I walk through in the morning. Compare these two

 Ah the ‘burbs.
